Tricia Rivas, Trixies Aveda Concept Salon
Tricia Rivas had dreamed of owning her own salon since beginning her career as a hairstylist. It was important that her salon be on the south side of Des Moines, where she was born and raised. Trixies became a reality in March of 2007. Since then Tricia has grown her business from one person to a staff of 7. Tricia and her Image Consultants bring a new atmosphere to the south side and what it means to be a Aveda Concept Salon. In addition to offering hair services, Trixies offers a new salon concept — spa services. Tricia also serves as the Iowa coordinator for Postpartum Support International, where she helps families find resources while suffering from postpartum depression. Tricia is also the founder of Saint Monica’s Meals at Christ the King Church, where volunteers take home-cooked meals to families with a new baby.
Citizen of the Year, East Des Moines
Nadine Hogate, Chairwoman of the Neighborhood Revitalization Board
Longtime city activist and east-sider, Nadine Hogate recently finished 21 years of service on the Des Moines’ Neighborhood Revitalization Board, which advocates for and assists the city’s 58 neighborhood associations. Nadine has long been known for her hard work and determination to improve the quality of life in the city’s neighborhoods. She was concerned about low property values throughout the city, and wanted to be involved in improving her hometown. She loved the idea of the formation of neighborhood associations and the concept of residents giving the city and county input on their needs. Over the years, Nadine has worked as a neighborhood advocate with many city officials, and she has praised Des Moines’ elected leaders for their support of residents.
